Vilamuseu and the Bou Ferrer: a Roman cargo returned to the town

en Published 10 September 2026

A Roman merchant ship lies about a kilometre off La Vila Joiosa, but the responsible first encounter is on land. Vilamuseu interprets the Bou Ferrer wreck through conserved cargo, research and a navigation workshop, placing it within more than 2,700 years of local settlement.

Why it matters

The roughly thirty-metre ship sailed from the southern Iberian province of Baetica in the mid-first century AD. Thousands of amphorae carried fish sauce, while lead ingots bearing imperial marks point toward a cargo associated with Nero's administration and a destination in Rome. Its exceptional preservation has made excavation, conservation and controlled public access an international model.

Plan the visit

Begin with the museum's town sequence, then focus on how hull, amphora packing and metal cargo are reconstructed from underwater evidence. Vilamuseu was designed to reduce physical, sensory and cognitive barriers through tactile elements, clear circulation and visible conservation work. Underwater visits are specialist, limited and separately authorised; never assume ordinary recreational diving at the site.

  • Check the current Bou Ferrer display and guided-tour timetable.
  • Allow tactile exhibits priority for visitors who rely on them.
  • Do not confuse a museum reconstruction with recovered complete hull sections.
  • Use only authorised archaeological dives if a programme is officially offered.

Connect the story

The La Vila Joiosa guide links Allon, painted fishermen's houses and the working port to the ancient maritime traffic offshore.
